Cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD, is a molecular compound found in the cannabis and hemp plant proven to be an effective holistic treatment for a wide range of health conditions, ailments, and diseases. It has been scientifically proven to modulate and repair many physiological systems in the human brain and body, through the endocannabinoid system.  Found in all mammals, the endocannabinoid system is made up of several receptors that react only to cannabinoids.  And in-part the reason why these plant-based compounds have been known to help ease the pain of various medical conditions.

CBD can have many positive benefits on brain function, the most pronounce effect is CBD's ability to increase anandamide levels. Anandamide is a cannabinoid that occurs naturally in the human body and is responsible for regulating neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin.

CBD helps to by regulating these neurotransmitters making it effective and ideal for mood disorders. Most notably aiding in the treatment of anxiety and depression.

CBD also can reduce the oxidative stress and free radical damage to brain cells, providing a source of protection and healing for the brain.  One study found that the use of CBD “increased the number of viable brain cells and reduced the number of injured brain cells by more than 50%”

Growing research supports that CBD reduces blood flow to certain areas of the brain, specifically the hypothalamus, which is linked with anxiety.

As CBD quiets the activity in these areas of the brain, it can lessen symptoms of anxiety.

CBD also works as a powerful antidepressant. This is similar to THC as both cannabinoids have the ability to balance dysfunction in the endocannabinoid system, with CBD you won't get intoxicated by the effects of THC. In principal, CBD can act on serotonin receptors to mitigate symptoms of depression.

One of the most powerful uses of CBD oil is in fighting seizure disorders, which greatly separates it from THC. It is believed the anticonvulsant effects experienced by CBD are due to its ability to reduce excitement of brain cells, which contributes to seizures.

CBD increases the release of G A BA; a neurotransmitter whose primary function is to reduce excitability within the nervous system.

Another unique and relatively new discovery is that CBD can help to combat schizophrenia and other types of psychosis. This is related to how CBD regulates anandamide as higher levels of anandamide are linked to a decrease in psychotic symptoms.

CBD to reduce pain and inflammation

The endocannabinoid system works to regulate pain, appetite, inflammation, reproduction, stress response and immune function. CBD, in particular manages pain by acting on the CB2 receptor common in immune cells.

By acting on this receptor, CBD can block pain signals as well as reduce inflammation in the cells.  Some would take CBD the same as they'd reach for an over the counter remedy, others have found it's effectiveness to reduce the symptoms of chronic pain and restore their daily lives.
